Maharshi Veda Vyasa was born on a full moon day in the month of Ashadha (July- August). His father was Rishi Parasar (grandson of Rishi Vasishta) and Mother was Matsyagandha (Satyawati). The whole world celebrates this day as Guru poornima गुरु पूर्णिमा or Vyasa poornima व्यास पूर्णिमा.
According to Linga MahaPurana (Part 1, chap-91,92) VedaVyas was वेदसंस्थाप्रवर्तकः VedaSansthaPravartak
पराशरसुतो योगी ऋषिया॑सो महातपाः ।
मम भक्तो भविष्यश्च वेदसंस्थाप्रवर्तकः॥59॥
Vyasa - the great yogi, who was the son of Parasara, will perform here a great penance. He, being my devotee, will start the institution of the Vedas.
In the above mentioned eminent sloka, Maharshi Vyas is portrayed as VishalBuddha ‘विशाल बुद्ध’ (has sharp wide range of intelligence) and as one who lit the lamp of knowledge metaphorically with the oil of works like 18 Puranas, Mahabharat and such many more. He edited and compiled the four Vedas, and He is “Rishi” of Srimad Bhagwata Gita. He also composed Ishvara Gita and VyasaGita mentioned in Kurma Purana. He also taught Dattatreya, a great Guru himself. Henceforth, Vyasa is called ‘Vishal-Buddha’ (great intelligence).
